The Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity aims to make the first powered flight on another planet when it takes off on Mars. It has now landed and safely checked in with the rover. It should detach and fly within the first 30-60 days of the mission. I learned a lot getting to visit the drone right before it was mounted on the rover at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
How do you fly in 1% of Earth's atmosphere:
Have large rotors (they are 1.2m in diameter) and spin them very fast, around 2500 RPM (5x the speed of a helicopter on Earth).
Plus the aircraft has to be light:
The Mars helicopter weighs in at 1.8kg or around the same as a laptop. Every piece had to be stripped down for weight. Instead of using aerogel for insulation, the craft makes use of CO2 gaps between components. Even aerogel was too heavy!
One of the major challenges is surviving the Martian night:
Temperatures plunge to -80C to -100C so two thirds of the craft's power is actually used to keep its electronics warm. Only one third is used for flying. The estimated flight time is 90 seconds.
The craft can't be driven remotely, it will have to fly autonomously, using its own sensor suite to determine how to fly. The round trip 20 minute delay with Earth means steering the craft from mission control would be impossible.

So funny... Humans are so idiots. No one is realizing that a helicopter can NOT fly in a place like Mars where there little to no atmosphere. Heli is named INGENUITY by Nasa. The word comes from Latin, INGENUUS,and means... Naive.
Sebastian Nolte
Sebastian Nolte 2 kun oldin
So you have been been Mars or how do you know about the details of atmosphere of Mars? It is so funny and stupid: The same people who tells you what the atmosphere of Mars is like, also built this helicopter, made for the thin atmosphere of Mars. Why don't you just actually debunk it? So take the data they are given to you about the atmosphere of Mars, and the data you have about the helicopter and calculate if it works? Or make a simulation. Oh, you can't, because you are not an engineer? Then just shut up. It is so weird, I wonder how you even think this hoax and conspiracy should work. The JPL in Pasadena is well connected to the Caltech. So probably even engineering students from the the Caltech work on things like this. It is the same with the Van Allen Belt: I always read "it is not possible to pass the Van Allen Belt" as an "argument" by people who don't believe in the moon landings. That just makes NO SENSE! Because these people have not been there to measure the radiation there. Instead, the same people, who tells them that there is a radiation belt in the first place, also tells, that it is possible to pass it. So how can you say that we cannot pass the Van Allen Belt? It is ridiculous.

@Oldhardy I also want to say: Think about it. There are thousands of aerospace engineers in the people. Pople who actually build stuff like that, work in that field, have studied this. Why haven't anybody said yet, that it doesn't work? I can imagine, that at several universities in the world, professors even use this as exercises or examns for students involving this thing. And as I said, also the JPL is just a part of a big university, nobody prevents you from working there or study. You really think the people in the video are actors? Or think about it from the other side: Even regular criminals put effort into complex plans, getting alibis etc, so that investigators don't find out, who the commiter is. And if often works. But a big federal agency, with a big budget, resources, access to intelligence agencies,... make up a hoax story about a Mars mission and present something very open and offensive (it is in every media, you can get much information about it...), that can be easily debunked by a model helicopter pilot? Really, that is what you believe? That NASA etc. are THAT stupid?
Agent 666
Agent 666 Kun oldin
@Oldhardy Your numbers are wrong. Use the lift equation and do it properly. It all checks out just fine. And that includes the power calculation that haven't done either. Anyway thanks for demonstrating that you haven't done the calculations so you have no basis for your claim.
Oldhardy
Oldhardy Kun oldin
... I actually do not want to get so involved in youtube comments, for the reason I do not answer everything. When I say no atmosphere, I mean that 1.2% of the earth's atmosphere for flying means that there is actually no atmosphere. Think about it, you need on earth for a two kilogram model helicopter an approximate rotor diameter of about 1.5 meters. Then I would have to increase the rotor diameter by 98.2% to have a similar model for Mars. Even if you take only fifty percent, you see that it is technical nonsense. You will probably say, yes, the rotor has a special design and so on. Go to a model airfield and ask a helicopter pilot how much electricity he needs to fly and then alone the charging of the batteries with electricity from solar sails...ha ha ha all complete Nonsens, sorry
Sebastian Nolte
Sebastian Nolte 2 kun oldin
@Oldhardy Of couse your haven't answered to Agent 666. Who ever claimed that there is zero atmosphere on Mars? You can just look up that the atmospheric pressure on the ground is 6* 10^−3 bar. And not zero. I guess you can also look up thee data about Perseverance, the parachute etc. and calculate if it adds up. Or it is easier to just use common sense, you don't have to calculate anything: There are many people working on it, and there is nothing secret about it. The JPL is not a secret NASA labatory, instead it is part of the Caltech, a famous university with more than 2000 students. So engineering students also work on these projects, and on building other probes and space vehicles. And they are all stupid? Or all are part of the conspiracy, although everybody can study or work there?
Oldhardy
Oldhardy 4 kun oldin
The rotor of a helicopter repels the air and can thus ascend. The atmosphere of Mars has only, as far as I know about 1.2% of the density of the Earth's atmosphere, the helicopter can never fly...now way... and I am model helicopter pilot.....Helicopter on Mars 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Sebastian Nolte
Sebastian Nolte 2 kun oldin
Oh, and BTW: Here on earth the air density is already only 1 % at an altitude 36 km. But still the buoyancy was strong enough that Felix Baumgartners heavy capsule with his body in it was lifted up by a helium balloon up to 39 km.
Sebastian Nolte
Sebastian Nolte 2 kun oldin
Ok, so here you say, that it has 1.2% of the density of earth's atmosphere, why do you say in the other comment that it is NO atmosphere at all? How do you know that THAT exact helicopter cannot fly? Have you calculate how high the uplift is for that certain helicopter in that exact atmosphere, and if it is high strong enough to lift the thing? And why do you think the engineers are idiots? Or you think the are liars? It just makes no sense what you say.

Would that redefined belief system believe that NASA did the following in order to fake the flight? 1 - Build and launch the rocket, just to fake the flight 2 - Employ 100s of people at JPL and get them to design the rover, skycrane, helicopter and everything else that was on that rocket 3 - Get them to build and test all of those things 4 - Get them design and build and test the radio systems that receive data from the rocket and skycrane and rover 5 - Get them to research how to accurately land the rover and write shed publish scientific papers about that 6 - Get them to write and publish scientific papers on the design and control of the rover 7 - Get them to write and publish scientific papers on the design and control of the helicopter 8 - Get them to monitor the flight for 7 months including the 7 minutes of the landing 9 - Get them to receive telemetry and images from the rover And meanwhile, in order to fool all of those JPL engineers and scientists, they also set up a super secret team that 1 - Faked the 7 months of flights telemetry 2 - Faked the 7 minutes of landing telemetry and video 3 - Faked the subsequent data and imagery 4 - Managed to do all the above without the JPL guys noticing And, if you believe all of that, you have to also believe that all of the radio amateurs in the world who aimed their satellite dishes at the flight and monitored it all the way to Mars and during the landing were somehow fooled into believing that's what they were tracking. So yes, some people have very strange belief systems.

vxeel
vxeel 3 kun oldin
@Myacc Toostale surely we have props that spin at this rpm (and under the sound barrier) here in earth. They create thrust just fine. Think horizontal airplanes. Edit. Unless you mean in our thicker atmosphere the motor itself doesn’t have enough power to push the blades up to an RPM that would lift it in our heavier gravity.
Myacc Toostale
Myacc Toostale 3 kun oldin
i think on earth in a thick atmosphere it could only spin at a lower rpm. at that rpm the blade shape doesnt produce lift because of complicated flow over the blades.

Let me get this straight...the world record altitude for helicopter flight (electric or other) is 40,820 ft and is limited by both the engines ability to breath and air that is dense enough to provide lift to the rotors. There are other obvious limitations for electric flight. There are videos circulating that clearly demonstrate that when the atmospheric conditions of mars (co2 included) are recreated in a vacuum chamber, an electric fan can NOT even ruffle the down on a feather dangling directly in front of it...yet we are supposed to just believe this hog wash you are selling? When are you going to admit that nasa has been faking absolutely everything...right from the beginning!?

@The Bloody Truth You mean the wire used to counter part of Earth's gravity, to match the gravity on Mars. If course it suits your preconceived notions to lie about that. NASA calculations? No, it's a standard helicopter calculation. You may be aware of helicopters they are quite common. So, rather than continue with your nonsense, use that equation and tell us what the lift is for that drone on Mars. Go.

@Agent 666 I'm well aware of the alleged vacuum chamber test...where the wire used to pull the copter off its perch is clearly visible. Have you seen the vacuum chamber test done with a high altitude flight suit? You know the one...where the bottle of water starts to boil and the rubber glove strapped to a pipe with a lever valve on it starts to expand...and the other high ranking jet pilot stays in the chamber with the guy in the suit...only he isn't wearing any protection? I'd say that you are the one that do some research, instead of showing your ignorance. You really should pay more attention to what you're watching. That's the thing with science - is all open and anyone can repeat those experiments. You should try The problem is that the real experiments disprove the nasa calculations that you are promoting based simply on belief.

@The Bloody Truth So that's a no, you haven't calculated the lift. You should try that instead of showing your ignorance. And you're unaware of the video showing the drone flying in a vacuum chamber. You should do some research, instead of showing your ignorance. The maths is very simple and well known. It's called the lift equation. Google it. To use it you will need to know the size and speed of the rotors, atmospheric density on Mars, etc. Google those too. Then you can find out if it should work or not, and you won't be quite so ignorant. That's the thing with science - is all open and anyone can repeat those calculations. You should try.

@Frede Carlslund to prove something requires a third party with an open and intellegent mind, in your case I don't think this is provable.
